toolkit for vital visibility
2022-23
The Toolkit for Vital Visibility is a proposal and invitation to bring about a support system, energy, and visibility to workers in higher education without permanent, secure employment. Having worked as an hourly-paid lecturer in the UK for 5 years, I made this in response to feeling alone, disheartened and exhausted.
Being a worker in a UK university without a permanent contract is very common: 46% of teaching-only staff are employed on fixed-term contracts and 40% on hourly paid contracts (UCU, 2020).
The Toolkit for Vital Visibility suggests a series of daily 10-minute group exercises intended to happen during lunch breaks in the hope that precarious staff members of the university can come together to: form a community, build energy for themselves and as a group both in and out of work, and create visibility of the huge issue of precarity in higher education. Permanent staff and students are also invited to join.
The toolkit is available as a 12-page A5 2-colour risograph printed booklet below for £2 (to cover postage costs) or as a PDF here . Please try it out!
